Excerpt

As I slouched in my seat, barely visible over the steering wheel, I saw a strange bike pass by, make an illegal U-turn, and pull in behind me. Oh fuck, no! This couldn’t be. I slid further down into my seat, but my head turned without my saying so, my eyes glued to the image in the mirror. Strong thighs carried an impressive, jean-clad package closer to me. I could tell my brother’s package from thousands. I’d been lusting after that particular cock since I was ten. I knew every vein, every ridge, every shade that had ever adorned it. I groaned and pinched the bridge of my nose. Sweet gods of brotherly love, keep me in one piece. I wasn’t supposed to see him till tonight. He was working or something; I didn’t know what. I never paid attention to Mom’s chatter.

“Hey, Trist. What do you think? Are they going to revive her this time?” His warm yet teasing voice washed over me, sending shivers up and down my body. Eight fucking months since I’d seen him last and this was how much I’d evolved. Less than a minute and I was already losing my shit.

“Trevor, what the fuck are you doing here? I thought Dad was going to pick me up.” I cringed at the harshness of my tone and felt more than heard his gasp. I was so attuned to how my brother reacted, I could have guessed every little gesture he’d make to respond to absolutely everything.

“Wow, Trist, aren’t you happy to see me,” he said in a barely audible whisper.

I pushed myself to look at him and gave him an apologetic smile. Taking in those dark eyes, the high, angular cheekbones, the olive, flawless skin, and the full, dark red lips with their natural pout, I sighed and wondered how exactly I was going to be here for the next three nights and not go completely off my rocker.

“Sorry, Trev. I’m tired, this car’s shit, and Dad said—”

 “Don’t sweat it.”

He cut me off harshly, waving a hand. I’d hurt his feelings, I knew. Ever since I’d fled to college, I’d been giving my brother the cold shoulder. It was hard at first as we’d always been close, but the more time passed, the better I became at it.

“Come on, get in. It’s hot as hell out there.”

To my relief, he nodded and walked around to the passenger seat. He got in with that annoying grace of his which was unfathomable coming from someone who’d never been involved in any activity that would explain such a trait. Quite the contrary, he’d always played on the bad boy side, loud and threatening, getting himself into trouble more often than not.

REVIEW

Snow White and the Seven Angels is an uplifting tale for young and old alike. In the beginning we meet White, a prince who has everything and should be happy. Despite the smiling facade he presents to the world, he harbors a secret pain. Like many LGBT youth, he seeks comfort and understanding from those closest to him, but sadly, does not find it. When true love enters his world, he finds the courage to expose his secret and fight for his own identity. And, Snow is born.

I enjoyed the author’s take on this well loved tale. The classic elements that make the fairy tale unique are included but with their own special twist. Instead of the seven dwarves, Snow is aided by the the Seven Angels who are instrumental in helping her find her destiny. The way each angel was included was cleverly portrayed while showcasing the struggles a transgender youth faces in every day life.

The end of the story is heartwarming and gives hope to all that they too can reach their happily ever after.

Secret Of The Manor – Excerpt – The Garden Party

Miles, CEO of A-Genet, was a good man and a fine leader. Warren got on well with him. But, while Miles played host, Warren looked upon the party with a more cynical eye. It was an occasion where the title CEO took on a whole new meaning. At such times, CEO meant Cock-Enlarging Officer. The epithet worked for Warren on so many levels. Warren was sure Miles knew what happened every time he spoke to an ambitious employee, especially the males. The man’s winning words had an immediate effect, and the person he was talking to always changed his stance, and seemed to have more down his trousers than when he walked in.

The annual garden party was also a time many took advantage of to network, in various guises. One or two carried virtual knives. Warren knew the game rules. It was a necessary evil in a place where, if you didn’t watch your back, others took advantage. It wasn’t pretty, but it was better than the game some played. He’d been bitten by the latter before; it was one reason for his degrees of separation.

Warren had settled into his comfortable cane chair and relaxed with a glass of wine. He completed the “Hello, darling; wonderful dress, are those new shoes?” social niceties expected of him with the wives, and the “This quarter is going well, any news on that contract?” dialogue with his colleagues in high management. He chinked glasses, ate well, smiled, and conversed with the willing. He stayed with his crowd, and was wary of others who approached him—climbers who decided he was one of those worth sucking up to. Maybe he was unfair to some, but he’d seen too many cases of backbiting to embrace an idealistic approach to office shenanigans.

About the author

Taylin Clavelli lives in the United Kingdom, about 15 miles south of Birmingham, and a short journey from the world famous Cadbury’s Chocolate factory. She’s married with children and loves her family with all her heart.

Her love of books has been a long standing affair, with Taylin liking nothing better than to lose herself in an imaginary world.

Until she met Lily Velden, she never considered trying her hand at writing. However, after talking ideas, Lily encouraged her to put pen to paper—or rather, fingers to keyboard. Since, with a few virtual kicks in the right place, she hasn’t stopped. Her confidence eventually led to her writing an original work for submission.

Her first published work was Boys, Toys, and Carpet Fitters, developed for the Dreamspinner Press Anthology – Don’t Try This At Home.

Now she absolutely adores immersing herself into the characters she creates, and transferring the pictures in her brain to paper, finding it liberating, therapeutic, and wonderful.

Outside of writing, her interests include; martial arts (she’s a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Taekwon-do), horse-riding, all of which facilitates her love of a wide variety of movies. Her action heroes include Jet Li and Tony Jaa—finding the dedication these men have for their art combined with their skill both amazing and a privilege to watch. If pressed, she’ll admit to thinking that the screen entrance of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean – Curse of the Black Pearl, and Shadowfax in LOTR, to be the greatest screen entrances ever. Her all-time favorite movies are Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

The simple things in life that make her day, putting a smile on her face are:

Laughter – especially that of her children.

The smell of lasagna cooking – it makes her mouth salivate.

The dawn chorus – no symphony ever written can beat the waking greetings of the birds.

Excerpt

“I’m really proud of you,” Rhys’ dad says, shaking his son’s hand and pulling him in for a hug. When he lets go, Rhys doesn’t speak, distracted by something two cars down. Rhys’ dad follows his son’s gaze to the unnaturally tan boy taking his cap off and shaking his head to try to fluff out his hair.

“Who’s that?” his dad asks, smirking at Rhys.

The guy checks his reflection in the side mirror and runs his fingers through his hair.

“Huh? Oh, just some guy.”

“Go talk to him,” his dad says, pushing him toward the guy.

“Dad, no,” Rhys says, blushing.

“Maybe I should tell your mother about him, she’ll talk to him for you,” his dad offers, a mischievous grin on his face.

“What’s that?” his mother asks, distracted by taking pictures of the buildings surrounding the quadrangle.

“Nothing.” Rhys sighs. “I hate you,” he whispers to his dad, a smile on his face as he walks down to the guy, who’s wearing a blue T-shirt and khaki shorts.

“Hey, Liam. Congratulations on graduating.”

“Yeah, thanks… you too.” Liam looks at Rhys like he’s trying to place him.

“Thanks. It’s Rhys, by the way. We had a couple of classes together.”

“Yeah, I know who you are.” Liam smiles. “You made that B*Witched documentary for our film editing class.”

“Yeah, I did. And you made a film about how Japanese Americans were treated during World War II. It was really good,” Rhys adds after a few seconds of silence.

“So, I gotta get going and meet my parents at their hotel.” Liam tosses his cap and gown in the trunk before getting in his car.

“Oh, right. Yeah, my family is waiting too.” Rhys turns toward them and sees his mom taking a picture of the guys talking. “Dammit.” He looks back at Liam and sees him smiling.

“Later,” Liam says, shutting the door and starting his car.

“Bye,” Rhys mumbles, turning and sulking back to his family. “That was so embarrassing!” he says when he reaches the car.

EXCERPT

“Where do y’all live?” Cecilia asked once they were settled in the shade of a huge tree and had toasted Endless Love.

“Denver.”

“Serious? So what, you’re in town for Pride?”

“No,” Clark said. “We’re flight attendants. We’re on a layover. We were actually supposed to be working today, but San Fran-Denver canceled.”

“So you got married instead?”

“You think you’re surprised,” Tanner said with a grin.

“I think that’s adorable,” Tess said. “How long have you guys been together?”

Tanner smiled at Clark, then pulled his phone out of his pocket to check the time. “What’s it been, babe? An hour and a half?”

“Already?” Clark said. “Time does fly.”

Cecilia made a show of setting her glass down with a thunk. “Wait. You guys aren’t a couple?”

“Well, we are now.”

“We’re friends,” Clark hastened to add. “And you know, we’ve fooled around.” He reached for Tanner’s hand. “I’ve been wanting to be a couple.”

Tanner smiled. “A little bit I have, too.”

“Really?” Clark asked, visibly pleased by this revelation, as if Tanner hadn’t just legally hitched his wagon to Clark’s star like an hour ago.

“Really.”

Both girls were gobsmacked, but Tess soon said, “Well, you got that wish.”

Cecilia pursued the theme. “But you weren’t, like, boyfriends or anything?”

The hand-holding husbands shook their heads. Nope.

“Hadn’t even talked about it?”

Nope.

“And you married each other because…?”

“Well, you guys seemed to think it was a good idea,” Tanner said with a smile.

Jesse can hardly believe his luck when their paths cross again on the patio of a popular gay bar. The One That I Want

THE NEXT morning he was there again, and his lips quirked in a small smile when he saw me. I looked at all the people milling around the elevator, then headed for the stairs. I couldn’t stop myself from looking over my shoulder. Mr. Gorgeous was staring at me, his brow furrowed and his smile gone. At least I could breathe in the stairwell. I took the stairs for the rest of the week, successfully eluding another encounter with Mr. Way-out-of-my-league.

Friday morning came, and I looked toward the elevator, expecting to see him waiting with the hordes, but he wasn’t there. I didn’t always see him, and I presumed he traveled for work or maybe had breakfast meetings on the days I didn’t see him. Heading for the stairs, I pushed the door open as I tried to fit my Encore magazine into my messenger bag.

“Why are you ignoring me?”

My heart felt like it had flown out of my chest. I grabbed the railing to steady myself with one hand; the other clutching at my chest like it was possible to stop my heart from flying away.

“Jesus, holy... Are you trying to kill me? I’m sure it’d be less painful to throw me down the stairs.”

“Sorry, but you’ve been avoiding me all week. Short of stalking you on your way home I thought this was a better, non-psychotic way of getting you to talk to me.”

“And scaring someone to death in an empty stairwell is less psychotic?”

Hopelessly Devoted

One year on from Paul’s proposal, Jason is living a life he never dreamed of. As he fusses with his tie and readies to walk down the aisle, he reminisces about the previous twelve months. Guest Post - R.J. Jones

The Proposal

You would have figured out by the cover of Hopelessly Devoted that there’s a wedding. It got me thinking of my own special day and my husband’s proposal.

Everyone remembers how their partner proposed. Some get down on one knee, some hide the ring in a fake flower or glass of champagne. Some simply come out with it one night while lying in bed. Whichever route the person chooses it’s always remembered and the story is shared for years to come.

So I thought I’d share my story.

My husband and I had been living together for about a year and we had spoken about it previously. It wasn’t really a surprise, we knew we would get married but he hadn’t officially asked me. He used to do this joke where he’d tell me to close my eyes and pretend to ask me, then slip something on my finger. Usually a bottle cap or the plastic ring from a milk bottle. Yeah. Hilarious. “You know, when you ask me for real I’m not going to believe you,” I said once. He replied that when the time came it would be a surprise because I wouldn’t expect it.

Except I did.

I felt the air change around us and I knew he was going to ask me for real. We were holidaying on the sunshine coast of Queensland one year. We were staying with family in Noosa and were spending Christmas with them. My husband’s mother and step-father made the trek north and we were constantly busy. I confided in my future mother-in-law one night and told her I thought her son was going to propose sometime that week, maybe Christmas day in front of everyone. Needless to say she got very excited. I’m one of the lucky few that get along with their MIL.

Christmas Eve and my then boyfriend took me out for a nice dinner, just the two of us, then a walk out to the headland that overlooked Noosa Beach. He wasn’t really the romantic walk type so my heart was fluttering madly in anticipation. He stopped walking at a part along the boardwalk and we went through the motions. I closed my eyes and held out my hand like I’d done on numerous occasions beforehand. I knew this was different because I heard him blowing on something, then I felt the cool metal being placed on my finger. Turns out, the ring was in his pocket and he was blowing the lint free. I can’t remember the exact words he used but

I remember saying something like, “Holy shit. You’re actually asking me for real this time!”

I know I expected it, but it didn’t make it any less exciting. To see a gold ring on my finger, instead of a piece of plastic, was amazing. There was no bended knee, or grand gesture, but it was perfect.

Sixteen years on and it’s still perfect.

Excerpt

The men were relaxed, almost dozing off as they ambled through a small walled field, when Warren noticed something strange. Despite there being plenty of flowers, a few bushes, and a dozen trees, not a single bird flew within the field’s borders. They occupied the flora outside its walls, but not one feathered animal ventured inside. The sensations invading Warren’s subconscious were not of eerie evil emanating from the dark side. They were ones of respectful space. It was as if someone had kicked the kids out of the house, turned the volume down, placed a glass of wine in one’s hand, and said, “Enjoy the quiet.”

When Warren looked over to Carl, the man had his eyes shut, serenely enjoying the surroundings. Even the horses seemed to tiptoe through the grass. Only bees pollinated the dandelions, daisies, and other meadow flowers. Warren himself could feel his heartbeat laze as if he’d had enough wine to relax but not enough to be tipsy.

“Why is it so quiet in here?” Warren whispered while looking for other signs of life.

Carl took a deep breath, opened his laughter-lined eyes, and pointed to the raised areas of the field. “Those mounds are believed to be Saxon burials.” He chuckled. “We can’t bring that gelding, Dusty, through here. He tries to lie down before we get to the gate at the other end.” Carl spoke like the scene was as natural as walking around the supermarket. Briefly, Warren imagined Carl around Tesco’s. The man wasn’t fat, but he was by no means thin. He enjoyed the comfort of a belly filled with his favourite foods. He’d hang onto the trolley, grumbling and limping his way around on a leg that had been kicked a few times over the years. Then he’d run his hands through the grey hair of his receding hairline that he covered with his flat cap. Warren smiled to himself before he stopped his musings and continued with his enquiries.

“Why don’t you get the Time Team in to find out for sure?”

Carl turned serious. “No. It’s not good to disturb the bones of the dead. It upsets ’em.”

EXCERPT

It took Dale a second to assess the situation. From the way the man held himself and angled his arm, he had to be armed. How the weapon had slipped past her guards, Dale didn’t have time to figure out. Aurore was too close and her guards were too far. He jumped at the same time she raised an arm to defend herself. Not a gun. A knife then? She could use some good defense lessons.

Dale landed with a thud right behind the attacker. Something tore in his side at the impact with the ground, but he went with the momentum and grabbed the man by the back of his neck, pulling him off Aurore. He shoved him away so hard, the sound of breaking bones echoed in the night as the man hit the building, collapsing in a heap, and remained motionless. Metal clattered on the pavement. Definitely a knife.

In an instant, a dozen guns were pointed at Dale. Too late, boys. He slowly breathed in and turned towards Aurore, his fists clenched by his side. There hadn’t been time to pull out a gun. “Are you hurt?” The words came out in a rush.

She shook her head, eyes wide, lips parted, and not a drop of color in her face.

They stared at each other, startled, frightened, and angry.

Dale frowned, ready to unleash his fury on her. “What—”

Aurore raised a hand. “We’ll talk when we get home.” She walked up to the fallen man and nudged him with the tip of her boot. No reaction. “Well, he’s no use to me now.” She let out an unhappy sigh. “All right. Torch the place and take him to the police station. Let Chief Horak know I’ll call him in the morning and I’m not happy I have to do his job.”

Dale didn’t move because those orders weren’t for him. The air left his lips in small pants, but he displayed no other signs of exertion.

With a wave of her hand, Aurore returned to her car. Dale nodded to the driver to get out, his hard stare silencing any protests, then he slid into the front seat and started the engine before anyone else could get in. Let them find their own means of transportation if they didn’t all fit in the other car. He didn’t want them there. Right now, he could barely stand Aurore’s presence, frozen in the front seat, without snapping.

The car sped away faster than it was safe to drive at that late hour. Dale’s hands clenched the steering wheel, his eyes fixated on the road. A heavy silence fell between them.

When he checked, flames reflected in the rearview mirror.
